Getting ready for winter…. If you’re the person that always suffers from colds and infections over the winter then maybe your immune system needs boosting. Here are a couple of things to try:
- Go orange! The vitamin A contained in orange fruits and vegetables (satsumas, sweet potato, carrots, squash) keeps your mucus membranes healthy. That’s your skin, the lining of your lungs and intestines, all of which are the first places that nasty winter bugs will hit.
- Go green! Switching from coffee to green tea will give you a daily hit of extra-strong antioxidants called polyphenols. Incredibly these particular anti-oxidants are more effective than those in fruit and vegetables. They will mop up the free radicals in your body keeping your immune system in great shape.
Did you know? Sugar reduces the ability of white blood cells to destroy invading bacteria. So if you feel a cold coming on try to resist the urge for chocolate and sugary snacks. Instead attack those bugs with vegetable soups. The anti-oxidants contained in the vegetables will stimulate white blood cells, getting you on the road to recovery
